Holly Zell, LPC, PhD

Licensed Professional Counselor & Associate Training Director: Affirm Program

Pronouns: She/They

About Me

My name is Holly and I use she/they pronouns. I identify as queer and nonbinary and I am explicitly affirming of all my clients’ identities, including (but not limited to): queer and trans individuals, sex workers, those in non-traditional relationships, disabled individuals, neurodivergent individuals, and body diversity/fat positivity.

I am ever pursuing knowledge and learning in anti-racist practices and the acknowledgement of my privilege as a White person. I am always striving to bring my humanness and openness to my clinical work, and welcome and encourage my clients to bring their full humanness to therapy too.

Therapeutic Approach

I have historically worked mainly with people coming to therapy to address trauma, including childhood and chronic trauma. Doing this work, I have come to understand that building trust takes time, and every individual needs their own unique approach to honor their own unique journey. I believe in the use of humor, genuineness and the power of real human connection within the therapeutic relationship.

I welcome clients bringing many different concerns, and other main areas where I have experience include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Grief and loss
  • Chronic stress
  • Self-esteem and self-concept

In therapy, I mainly operate from a person-centered lens, meaning that my aim is to center the values and insights of my clients when developing and pursuing therapeutic goals. I also work from a systems-focused approach, acknowledging that we are all influenced and impacted by the environments we exist in (families, communities, political systems and more). Sometimes this may involve examining one’s own privilege to live more in alignment with personal values, other times it may focus more on recognizing the harms of systemic oppression.

I also take an eclectic approach to tailor treatment to my client’s needs, and may include cognitive behavioral techniques, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), and skills-based or solution-focused approaches when appropriate.

Credentials & Experience

In 2017 I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with my master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. Following graduation, I worked for 3 years in community mental health, where I was also team lead for the suicide prevention team.

In 2021, I began my PhD in research psychology at Oregon State University. During my program, my research focus was suicide prevention for queer and trans communities, with a focus on community-based prevention. My dissertation focused on how social support and transition care relate to suicide prevention for trans and gender diverse adults. Throughout my program, I also ran private therapy practice where I worked mainly with queer and trans clients and neurodivergent folks.

I have been licensed as a professional counselor (LPC) since 2023.

Outside the Office

When I’m not doing therapy I’m almost certainly binge-watching shows and movies I’ve seen many times before. I love music deeply and nothing makes me happier than a concert. I love spending time in the city, reading, eating good food and treasure hunting in record stores.
