Leonard Kaufman, PhD

Licensed Psychologist & Clinical Director

Pronouns: He/Him/His

I am a clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults and families. After attaining my BA at Duke University, I earned my Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ, completing my internship at the Washington, DC Commission on Mental Health, with a focus on children and families. For over 25 years I have provided psychotherapy in private practice and agency settings, while also teaching, running assessment and treatment programs for children, and providing supervision and mentorship. Having moved to Portland in 2016, I am a licensed member of the Oregon Psychological Association, having served on its Ethics Committee. My specialties include identity and developmental issues throughout the lifespan (ages 5-70), as well as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, parenting, loss/grief, and chronic/terminal illness (including HIV/AIDS and cancer).

Therapeutically, my approach is eclectic, incorporating developmental, psychodynamic, cognitive- behavioral, relational, and gestalt approaches. My therapy process is highly collaborative and interactive. With children, I use play therapy and talk to help children address issues with which they are struggling. In practice, representational play can help children work through issues indirectly, while other forms of play, as well as discussion, address how to cope with struggles more directly. With adults, my approach focuses on identifying and working through unresolved core issues, as well as coping with struggles in the present.
