Matthias Hall, MA
Professional Counselor Associate
Pronouns: He/Him
Hello! My name is Matthias (muh-THIGH-us) and I’m a pre-licensed associate counselor with two years of clinical experience working with those in a wide range of life
challenges, especially those who have endured traumatic circumstances. My own history and experiences with trauma, growing up in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky, was foundational to my commitment for this work and led to my eventual understanding that healing comes from community and connection with others.
My approach to counseling is eclectic, but draws primarily from acceptance and commitment therapy, narrative therapy, Jungian psychology, stoic principles, and relational cultural theory. The goal in our work is to identify the obstacle and move through it courageously, as the obstacle in the way becomes the way. We accomplish this together through an honest examination of the waters in which we swim daily, holding space to experience the implicit as explicit, and exploring our inner world with curiosity rather than judgement.
I hold a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University and I have been working, in various capacities, in community mental health clinics for the past five years. Previously, I worked as a drug and alcohol counselor in Kentucky since 2023. In fact, I am a recent transplant here in Portland and I am excited to begin my journey in a new city! When not working, I am spending time with my dog (Lady), cat (Penny) and rabbit, (Pickles), or you can find me lost in a good book, studying up on a new philosophy, playing video games with my partners, checking out a new escape room with friends, or building a Gundam model.
