Hello! I’m Jo Shinners, a counseling intern for the Affirm 2STNB program. I am in my final year at Portland State University, pursuing my Master’s degree in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling.
My previous experience includes working as a Mental Health Practitioner in a day treatment setting, supporting:
-
Non-speaking autistic youth
-
Youth navigating Conduct Disorders and PTSD
I was inspired to become a counselor through my time in a developmental psychology research lab and by creating a Mental Emotional Social Health and Inclusion role at a summer camp. I believe that people deserve counselors with shared identities and experiences, and I am honored to provide affirming care to members of the trans community.
Therapeutic Approach
My focus is on being client-led and trauma-informed, creating a supportive, warm, and meaningful therapeutic alliance to help foster change and healing.
I draw from:
-
Somatic practices
-
Trauma-focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
-
Feminist therapy
-
Nature-based therapy
I strive to practice in ways rooted in:
-
Disability justice
-
Decolonization
-
Holistic healing
-
Affirming care
I also believe in the importance of continued growth and evolution in my practice, recognizing that the work of healing is dynamic and ever-changing.
