Charlie Kerns
Student Intern in the Affirm Two Spirit, Trans, Nonbinary (2STNB) Program
Pronouns: they/them
Are you the rainbow sheep of the family? Have you gone through life feeling like there’s some big inside joke everyone is in on except you? Do you get into arguments over family dinners with that one weird uncle about whether or not birds are real?
Have you ever felt like no one quite “gets” you? Do you want a counselor who shows up authentically as themselves—someone who can be serious but isn’t afraid to laugh with you (when appropriate, of course)?
If you said yes to any of these things, then I might be a good fit for you!
My Counseling Philosophy
I believe that cultivating a welcoming, safe, and affirming space is essential to the counseling process. In my counseling room, you can expect to feel:
-
Seen, heard, and valued
-
Supported in exploring all parts of your identity
-
Free to bring your whole self into the therapeutic relationship
I hold the belief that:
-
We are all experts of our own experiences
-
Our lives are shaped by how we interact with the world and how the world interacts with us
-
Healing requires awareness of intersectionality and systemic injustice
Others have described my style as “warm, fun, authentic, and client-centered.”
Therapeutic Approach
My framework is eclectic—more like a therapy quilt than a single blanket. While my work is rooted in Adlerian counseling theory (with its focus on community, connectedness, and authenticity), I also draw from:
-
Queer theory and multicultural theory
-
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Radically Open DBT
-
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
-
Creative interventions tailored to each client
Areas of Focus
I have experience supporting clients navigating:
-
Neurodivergence, Autism, ADHD
-
2SLGBTQIA+ identities and issues
-
Disability and chronic illness
-
Anxiety, depression, and trauma
-
Attachment wounds and interpersonal issues
-
Complex family dynamics and religious trauma
-
Helping professions and burnout
-
Asexuality and identity exploration
