He, Him, His or They, Them, Theirs

Hiya 🙂 my name is Jesse and I’m a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate. I earned my Master’s degree in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling from Portland State University in 2022.

As a therapist, I am supportive, engaged, and collaborative. I believe therapy works best when we’re working together to create a life worth living for you. I draw heavily from dialectical behavior therapy, interpersonal theory of counseling, and psychodynamic theory. In layman’s terms, this means I will utilize skill-based interventions, like mindful breathing and communication techniques, to help you manage difficult emotions, distressing relationships, complicated family situations, and past trauma. We will work together to challenge unhelpful behaviors, thoughts, and behaviors in a safe, compassionate environment that we co-create.

My therapeutic practice is based on respect for your individual needs and experiences. I believe that every person is doing the best they can with what they have at the time. My goal as your counselor is to support your natural drive toward healthy living which involves discovering what health looks like and means to you as an individual. Additionally, I aim to help you increase your awareness of your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, patterns in relationships, intersecting identities, and past experiences all for the purpose of growth and self-understanding.

I am actively engaged in social justice efforts and practice from a place of cultural humility. As a white, temporarily able-bodied, educated transgender therapist I acknowledge my intersecting identities play a complex role in my practice. It’s my goal to use my unique sociological position to undo systems of oppression including those I currently benefit from and unwittingly perpetuate.

As I make progress toward licensure I am supervised by Dr. Erica Aten.
