Portland Mental Health & Wellness is a thriving private practice and training practice with three locations in SE and SW Portland. We are a collaboration of psychologists, psychiatric prescribers, counselors, marriage and family therapists and our trainees. We emphasize relationship first and foremost and diagnosis and treatment from within that relationship.

We strongly emphasize trauma informed care, cultural competency, establishing comfort and safety for patients, and coordination of care with primary care doctors, specialists, pediatricians, schools, and other mental health clinicians.

Controller

Location: Portland, OR (with remote flexibility)

Supervisor: Executive Director

Employee Classification: Exempt (Salaried), Full-Time

Hours: Full-Time, 40 hours per week

Compensation: $105,000 to $115,000 annually

Primary Function:

The Controller is highly skilled and experienced, and primarily oversees all financial aspects of the organization. They will be responsible for managing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting, finance, and healthcare administration, with exceptional leadership and analytical skills.

In addition to overseeing financial operations for Portland Mental Health & Wellness, the Controller will be responsible for providing financial support and guidance to three affiliated, smaller companies within the organization. These companies and their respective responsibilities include:

Essential Functions:

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Develop annual budgets and forecasts in collaboration with department heads and senior management to support strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Financial Analysis: Conduct regular analysis of financial performance, variances, and key metrics to identify trends, opportunities, and risks.
  • Cash Management: Manage cash flow, monitor banking activities, and optimize investment strategies to ensure sufficient liquidity for operations.
  • Accounting Operations: Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure compliance with accounting principles, tax regulations, and healthcare industry standards. Implement and maintain internal controls to mitigate financial risks.
  • Audit and Taxation: Coordinate external audits and tax filings, liaise with auditors and tax professionals, and address any audit findings or inquiries.
  • Financial Systems and Technology: Evaluate, implement, and optimize financial systems and technology solutions to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
  • Leadership and Team Management: Provide leadership and guidance to the finance team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Strategic Initiatives: Collaborate with senior management on strategic initiatives, mergers and acquisitions, and other business opportunities to drive growth and enhance organizational performance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management, preferably in the healthcare industry.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP principles, financial reporting requirements, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proficiency in financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting techniques.
  • Experience with accounting software and financial management systems (Quickbooks Online and Gusto, specifically); familiarity with healthcare-specific software is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly and effectively.
  • Proven leadership abilities with a track record of building and managing high-performing teams.
  • Analytical mindset, attention to detail, and the ability to think strategically and solve problems effectively.
  • Commitment to integrity, ethics, and confidentiality in handling sensitive financial information.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

Work Environment: When working from a PMHW office, the position is in a well-lit office environment. Varied activities including sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting.

Mental and Physical Requirements: Involves sitting approximately 90 percent of the day, walking or standing the remainder. Ability to tolerate mental and emotional distress as an anticipated aspect of the position. May require working under stressful conditions.
