Portland Mental Health & Wellness is a thriving private practice and training practice with three locations in SE and SW Portland. We are a collaboration of psychologists, psychiatric prescribers, counselors, marriage and family therapists and our trainees. Director of Outpatient Psychotherapy Services

Location: All
Supervisor: Executive Director

Hours: Full-Time, 40 hours per week
Compensation: $135,000 annually

Primary Function:

The Director of Outpatient Psychotherapy Services is responsible for overseeing and supporting the Outpatient Therapy Team Directors, including clinical consultation and direction when needed, supporting compliance, clinical best practices, and generally being a go-to resource for Directors on site. The Director of Outpatient Psychotherapy Services is responsible for setting and meeting performance goals for outpatient therapy, financial and other measures of success. The Director of Outpatient Psychotherapy Services is responsible for collaborating with other department directors toward the overall success of Portland Mental Health & Wellness. This position must have a positive and supportive attitude toward the practice and its overall success. Must have the ability to think globally, solve problems, and have good decision-making skills. The Director of Outpatient Psychotherapy Services will have the option to see patients for the set rate per session and/or provide clinical supervision to pre-licensed practitioners at the set rate for supervision.

Essential Functions: 

  • Center Organizational Culture Principles & Diversity, Equity, Access and Inclusion Initiatives:  You will be responsible for developing and implementing initiatives that reflect our OCPs and promote diversity, equity, access, and inclusion within Outpatient Psychotherapy Services and PMHW as a whole. 
  • Develop and implement clinical programs: You will be responsible for developing and implementing clinical programs to provide quality care to clients. This may involve designing treatment plans, implementing evidence-based practices, and ensuring that clinical services meet regulatory and ethical standards.
  • Oversee clinical staff: As the Director of Outpatient Psychotherapy Services, you will be responsible for managing and supervising Clinical Directors who in turn support front line clinical staff. You will need to ensure that all staff members adhere to the practice’s policies and procedures and provide high-quality care to clients.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders: You will need to establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, such as referral sources, community organizations, and healthcare providers. This will help you to build a strong referral network and ensure that clients receive appropriate care.
  • Manage budget and resources: You will be responsible for managing the budget and resources allocated to the outpatient services department. This may involve developing and monitoring budgets, tracking revenue, identifying cost-saving measures, and ensuring that resources are used efficiently.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements: You will need to stay up-to-date on regulatory requirements and ensure that the practice meets all legal and ethical obligations. This may involve developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including clinical chart audits.
  • Provide clinical oversight and supervision: As the Director of Outpatient Psychotherapy Services, you will need to provide clinical oversight and administrative supervision to ensure that clinical services are provided in a safe, effective, and ethical manner. This may involve providing consultation, support, and feedback to clinical staff.
  • Monitor and report on outcomes: You will need to monitor and report on the outcomes of clinical services to ensure that clients receive high-quality care. This may involve collecting and analyzing data, developing performance metrics, and reporting on outcomes to stakeholders.
  • Participate in strategic planning: As a member of the senior management team, you will need to participate in strategic planning and decision-making to ensure that the practice achieves its goals and objectives. This may involve developing and implementing new initiatives, identifying opportunities for growth, facilitating organizational change and growth initiatives, and collaborating with other departments within the practice.

Performance Requirements: 

Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders. 
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment planning, and engagement of psychotherapy and/or psychiatric services.
  • Knowledge of principles of case conceptualization and diagnostic justification.
  • Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, and cultures and their history and origins.

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn medical terminology associated with specific role
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn basic insurance terminology and procedures associated with providing clinical services within an insurance-based practice.
  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation, for effective and appropriate communication.
  • Knowledge of web-based computer programs and applications in an Apple/Mac environment
  • Knowledge of and capacity to strengthen skills for working in Google Workspace.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of sound ethical practice in conjunction with the established and defined ethics of one’s training and discipline.
  • Appropriately and effectively assess and treat behavioral and affective disorders, with an emphasis on relational and process intervention models.
  • Assess risk for harm to self or others at intake as well as throughout the course of treatment.
  • Maintain current and comprehensive clinical documentation compliant with Oregon Health Authority requirements. 
  • Coordination of care with multiple providers, both within the practice and at other facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: A doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited university or Masters Degree in Psychology, Counseling or Clinical Social Work.
  • Licensure: The director must be licensed to practice psychology or psychotherapy in the state of Oregon. 
  • Experience: Previous experience in outpatient therapy services is essential, preferably in a management or leadership role. 
  • Leadership skills: The director must have strong leadership and management skills to effectively lead a team of therapists, supervise and evaluate clinical staff, and oversee the day-to-day operations of the outpatient therapy services. 
  • Business acumen: The director should have a good understanding of the financial and business aspects of the psychology practice, including budgeting, billing, and revenue generation.
  • Clinical skills: The director should be knowledgeable in a variety of therapeutic approaches and have experience working with a diverse patient population. 
  • Communication skills: The director must be able to effectively communicate with patients, staff, and other healthcare providers. 
  • Organizational skills: The director should be able to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail. 
  • Compliance: The director must be knowledgeable of all applicable legal and ethical standards, including HIPAA regulations and state licensing requirements.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment, including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc. 

Work Environment: When working from a PMHW office, the position is in a well-lit office environment. Varied activities including sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting. Must be able to see, hear, carry, bend, sit, and use a computer and keyboard for extended periods of time. Able to focus in an open office environment which may include direct or indirect interruptions.

Mental and Physical Requirements: Involves sitting approximately 90 percent of the day, walking or standing the remainder. Ability to tolerate mental and emotional distress as an anticipated aspect of the position. May require working under stressful conditions.
