Dr. Asani Seawel

Director of Behavioral Medicine

Pronouns: She/Her

I’m Asani Seawell, a licensed clinical psychologist with nearly 20 years of experience in behavioral medicine. I specialize in working with individuals experiencing insomnia and other sleep disorders, and I also support clients in their Health at Every Size® journeys, helping them cultivate sustainable, compassionate approaches to health and well-being.

My interest in psychology began during my undergraduate training, when an early introduction to psychology course opened my eyes to a specialization focused on health and well-being. As I looked around my own family and community, I saw how many people were living with chronic health conditions and struggling to make the kinds of changes that could improve their quality of life. I felt called to harness the power of psychology to support meaningful, sustainable health changes — particularly within communities that have not always had equitable access to care.

I believe deeply in a client-centered, collaborative approach to therapy. I view my role as a partner in your care, working alongside you to create practical, achievable steps toward your goals. Clients often describe me as warm, accepting, and collaborative, and I strive to create a space where you feel heard, respected, and empowered.

Therapeutic Approach

My therapeutic work is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and I also integrate strength-based, solution-focused, and brief therapy approaches. I believe that meaningful change happens when we collaborate around your specific concerns, identify what is already working in your life, and build from there.

Together, we will focus on practical strategies that support your health and well-being while honoring your lived experience. I am committed to helping you reach your goals by drawing on your existing strengths and the resilience you already possess. When we combine evidence-based tools with collaboration and compassion, powerful change becomes possible.

Credentials & Experience

I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the State University of New York at Albany (SUNY Albany).

My professional experience includes approximately 16 years in academic settings, where I trained undergraduate and graduate psychology students. Clinically, I have worked primarily in medical settings, including bariatric and weight management clinics as well as sleep disorders clinics. These experiences have shaped my expertise in behavioral medicine and health-focused psychological care.

Outside the Office

When I’m not working, I enjoy crafting, doing puzzles, cooking, and spending meaningful time with friends. I’m passionate about my community and find deep fulfillment in being of service to the people I love.
