Portland Mental Health & Wellness is a thriving private practice and training practice with four locations in Portland, as well as one location in Salem. We are a collaboration of psychologists, psychiatric prescribers, counselors, marriage and family therapists and our trainees. Associate Director of Intensive Outpatient Programs

Primary Function:

The Associate Director of Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) is a licensed mental health provider who serves as a clinical and operational leader, ensuring excellence in care delivery and smooth day-to-day functioning of the IOP. This position functions as the second-in-command to the Director, providing both hands-on clinical oversight and strategic program support. The Associate Director supervises clinicians and trainees, contributes to program development, and upholds PMHW’s commitment to culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and equity-centered care.

Essential Functions:

  • Clinical Leadership & Supervision
    • Provide direct clinical services, including evidence-based group, individual, and family therapy.
    • Conduct initial IOP intake assessments and ensure treatment plans align with program goals and clinical best practices.
    • Supervise associate clinicians, externs, and group facilitators, offering consistent feedback and developmental guidance.
    • Lead or co-lead case consultations and clinical meetings to support multidisciplinary coordination.
    • Model ethical and culturally responsive practice, supporting clinical quality across the IOP team.
  • Program Operations & Development
    • Partner with the Director to develop and refine IOP programming, including new group tracks, training modules, and patient engagement strategies.
    • Oversee daily operations, including scheduling, coverage planning, and communication with administrative teams.
    • Monitor census, attendance trends, and throughput to inform decision-making.
    • Support financial awareness and efficiency by collaborating with leadership on budgeting, staffing, and utilization.
    • Ensure operational alignment with PMHW’s organizational culture principles (OCPs) and TRUST Model.
  • Quality, Compliance, and Outcomes
    • Conduct chart reviews and maintain compliance with state regulations, ethical standards, and payer requirements.
    • Ensure timely, accurate clinical documentation and accountability among supervisees.
    • Participate in internal audits and quality improvement projects to strengthen clinical outcomes.
    • Partner with the Director to collect, track, and interpret data related to attendance, patient satisfaction, and program growth.
  • Staff Development & Team Culture
    • Support onboarding and training of new IOP clinicians and associates.
    • Serve as a trusted mentor and point of stability during transitions or leadership changes.
    • Foster a collaborative, psychologically safe environment that encourages reflection, learning, and feedback.
    • Lead by example in applying trauma-informed leadership and conflict repair practices.
    • Manage staff performance, reviews, and corrective action as needed
    • Support the recruitment and retention of IOP staff and students
    • Help IOP to maintain fiscal health, build culture and program development, and serve on the management team – responsible collaboratively for the health of the whole organization
  • Cultural Responsiveness & Advocacy
    • Champion diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEAI) across IOP programming and clinical work.
    • Address systemic barriers impacting mental health access and outcomes.
    • Engage in continuous self-reflection, consultation, and education around cultural humility and anti-oppressive practice.
    • Promote culturally grounded healing practices and inclusive approaches to care.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Required: a masters degree in psychology, counseling, or a related field, OR a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited university
  • Required: appropriate board approved licensing, current and unrestricted
  • Preferred: Oregon Board-Approved Supervisor for Associates
  • Preferred: 2+ years of leadership experience in behavioral health, preferably in an IOP or similar level of care
  • Proven ability to navigate complex team dynamics and provide trauma-informed supervision.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, printers, telephones, etc. 

Work Environment: When working from a PMHW office, the position is in a well-lit office environment. Varied activities including sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting.

Mental and Physical Requirements: Involves sitting approximately 90 percent of the day, walking or standing the remainder. Ability to tolerate mental and emotional distress as an anticipated aspect of the position. May require working under stressful conditions.
